How Carnoria calculates

What each step calculates, to which standard and how it is checked. This page grows as each phase is released.

  1. Building and climate

    In development

Outdoor heating design temperature and climate zone of each town. Floors, rooms with their use, area, height and indoor temperature, and building elements with their U-value, area, orientation and what lies on the other side.

IDAE technical guide on outdoor design conditions · CTE DB HE · RITE IT 1.1.4.1
  2. Heating loads

    In development

Fabric loss through each element with the adjustment factors for unheated spaces and ground, thermal bridges, minimum ventilation, infiltration and, if requested, intermittent heating reheat.

    EN 12831-1 · RITE IT 1.1.4.2 · CTE DB HS 3
  3. Underfloor heating

    In development

Floor heat output by floor covering, pipe spacing and screed; maximum surface temperature per zone; design room and flow temperature; flow rate, length and pressure drop of each circuit and manifold presetting.

    EN 1264-2, -3 and -4
  4. Radiators

    In development

Output at the real temperature difference from the rated output and the radiator exponent; number of sections or panel size; valve and lockshield.

    EN 442
  5. Pipework

    In development

Pipe sizes by velocity and pressure drop, fitting losses, index circuit, balancing, pump duty point and pipe insulation. With underfloor heating and radiators, mixing valve or a single temperature.

    RITE IT 1.2.4.2.1
  6. Heat pump

    In development

Output and COP interpolated between the test points by outdoor and water temperature, bivalent point, back-up and seasonal performance by temperature bins.

    EN 14511 · EN 14825
  7. Running costs

    In development

Consumption of the heat pump and back-up, yearly cost with editable prices compared with a gas or oil boiler, CO₂ emissions with the official conversion factors and payback.

RITE recognised document: emission and conversion factors

How it is checked

Five reference cases (a flat with low-temperature radiators, a two-storey house with underfloor heating, a home with underfloor heating and bathroom radiators, a small office and a refurbishment with existing radiators) are calculated twice: with the app and with an independent program written from scratch. A phase ships when both agree within 2 % and the difference is explained.

“Design” tables

Some UNE standards are not public. Until we have the official text of a table, the app marks it as a “design” value, cites where the value comes from and says so in the report.
